New Name for Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF)

Published on

MAF is changing its name to reflect the new functions of the organization following its merger with NZFSA and Fisheries over the past two years.

The new name is the Ministry for Primary Industries, Manatu Ahu Matua (MPI). It came into effect on 30 April 2012.

The name has been chosen because it covers all of the ministry's work across the agricultural, horticultural, aquaculture, fisheries, forestry and food sectors, and the protection of our primary industries from biological risk. Selection of the word "for" rather than "of" was deliberate, as MPI sees itself as promoting and enabling a much bigger contribution to NZ's GDP from the primary sectors.

MPI will continue to be the gateway to government for all of New Zealand's primary industries.

The logo of the Ministry for Primary Industries (www.mpi.govt.nz) will simply be the New Zealand Government Coat of Arms. This will be phased in over time as uniforms, signs and publications need to be updated.
