ISO 45001:2018 Audit

PF Olsen’s commitment to continuous improvement of the Health and Safety Management system, has been manifest in national awards and ground-breaking projects, however, we have never held an internationally recognised safety certification.  With the release of AS/NZS ISO 45001:2018 the timing was right.

The scope of the new standard is strongly aligned to the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, having a focus on risk management, stakeholder (PCBU) interactions, worker participation and wellbeing, and safety leadership.  It’s goal as always though is to prevent work related injury and ill health.

The decision to be audited against the new standard required a gap analysis of the current Health and Safety management system in Australia and New Zealand, which was commenced in December 2018.  This involved working our way through no less than 215 questions, which required several minor modifications to our system. Having made those adjustments we were ready for the second stage of the process, which was undertaken during March 2019.

This second stage was extensive and undertaken by Dr John Bryden of Telarc Limited who visited Kangaroo Island (off Adelaide, SA), Albany and Melbourne offices in Australia and Waipapa, Nelson, Blenheim, and head office in Rotorua New Zealand. The auditor assessed each business centre and visited operations run by Contractor businesses to check information and processes are understood and properly actioned.

The final audit resulted in two minor non-conformances (one here in NZ and one in Australia) and ten opportunities for improvement (OI). The non-conformances have been addressed as a condition of our certification; however, we are still to work through the OI’s in our regional and executive management forums.

The AS/NZS ISO 45001:2018 certification, possibly the first such for a New Zealand forestry company, is a great recognition for our collective efforts and one more milestone on our journey to safety excellence.
