Positive Feedback from Wood Matters Reader and Client

It is useful to get feedback from Wood Matters readers, and in this case it was particularly heartening to get such supportive words from an international forestry professional.

"Dear Sir

Your July Edition (No033) was in my own view, the best piece of forestry news journalism I have read. It was all there, packed with interest from seed to product loaded on ship and the way operational issues are confronted and solved at the planting and felling faces.

Yours sincerely

Thanks also to Mr Patrick Willock who made the effort to detail his satisfaction for the harvesting and marketing management work PF Olsen did on his 17 hectare Radiata pine forest recently.

I write to give my strongest recommendation for PF Olsen Ltd's Gisborne Branch.

Close to ten years ago I asked them to manage the harvesting and marketing of a 17ha block of Pinus Radiata I had on our farm at Whangara, north of Gisborne. It had been planted as a protection forest and was over 2kms from a road with difficult access.

From the start their advice was hugely helpful. They organized the formation of the road in to the block well in advance of harvesting, so that by the time harvesting was close it was well settled.

Prior to harvest, we sold the farm but kept a forestry right over the block.

This was where they really excelled. To get access they now needed to deal with a new owner and keep him happy. In this regard they could not be faulted. They kept in close contact with him, with the result that what could have been a disruptive, inconvenient operation went very smoothly and most importantly, left a satisfied landowner. The roading, the harvest, and the rehabilitation have been completed with absolute professionalism.

With the block being the size it was, attracting a contractor with cable logging capability was not easy, but they managed to, and a professional job was done.

They kept us well informed in the years leading up to harvest of the market conditions and despite our keenness to get the job done a few years ago, they gave us excellent advice as to whether or not we should proceed.

Immediately prior to planting their budgeting was clear and easy to understand, and once underway their monthly reporting, and paying out proceeds was transparent and timely.

They are now in the final stage of organizing the replanting.

The net result is that we are very contented tree owners about to hand back to a very contented landowner a replanted block left in a very acceptable condition, with our obligations under the now expired forestry right met in full.

I have absolute confidence in recommending Nick Bunting and his excellent staff at the Gisborne office to anyone needing their block managed. It is a total team effort from them, and they all "punch above their weight". I cannot speak more highly about them.

If anyone wanted to contact me further I would be happy to talk to them.

Patrick Willock.

Thanks Patrick!
