Protected Ecosystems

Protected  ecosystems  are  defined areas of indigenous vegetation within the exotic plantation forests. These areas can be hotspots for rare and endangered species, and contribute towards connective pathways for species movement across a landscape. Protected ecosystems can be terrestrial (e.g. podocarp forest) or a wetland, and can provide a multitude of ecological services, such as:

  • riparian  protection
  • rare species habitat
  • erosion control
  • aesthetic backdrop

A program of forest surveys has been maintained within the PF Olsen managed estate, focusing on:

  • qualitative assessment of vegetation remnants within the productive plantations of the OTPP, and Viking Global estates and transfer of acquired data to new records systems
  • presence or otherwise of threatened fauna, particularly kiwi, bats and North Island kokako
